Augusta is a consolidated city-county in Richmond County, Georgia, on the Savannah River along the South Carolina line. Following a 1995 election, the city of Augusta and Richmond County merged into a single government, and the consolidated community has a population of roughly 202,000, making it Georgia's second-largest city. It lies about 150 miles east of Atlanta. Augusta is best known worldwide as the home of the Masters Tournament, played annually at Augusta National Golf Club. The club was founded in 1932 by golfer Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts, and the first Masters was held in 1934. That golf legacy gives the city a distinctive international identity, but Augusta's economy and character rest on broader foundations as well. The city is a major center for medicine and the military. The Medical College of Georgia, founded in 1828 as Georgia's flagship public medical school, anchors Augusta University, and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center and the Fort Eisenhower installation bring a substantial military and research presence. These institutions, along with the Savannah River Site across the border in South Carolina, make Augusta a regional employment hub. Recreation centers on the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area, with walking and biking trails, boat tours, and the canal's industrial history, plus Savannah Rapids Park and the Riverwalk along the Savannah River. Public schools belong to the Richmond County School System, which enrolls roughly 32,000 students. Interstate 20 and Interstate 520 provide regional highway access.
