Claxton is the county seat of Evans County, in the southeastern Coastal Plain of Georgia. The city sits at the junction of two major U.S. highways, 301 and 280, a crossroads position that has long defined its role as a regional market and service town. Interstate 16 lies nearby, and Savannah is about 40 miles to the east, giving Claxton practical access to the Georgia coast while it retains a distinctly rural, inland character. At the 2020 census, the city counted 2,602 residents within a county of about 10,774 people. Claxton's best-known distinction is its fruitcake industry. The Claxton Bakery and the Georgia Fruitcake Company both call the city home, and their fruitcakes are shipped to customers across the country, earning Claxton the enduring nickname "Fruitcake Capital of the World." The first mass marketer of the Claxton Fruit Cake was local civic leader and philanthropist Albert Parker, and the industry remains a point of community pride and a seasonal economic driver. Evans County was created in 1914 from portions of Bulloch and Tattnall counties, with Claxton established as its seat.
