Putnam County Seat and Literary Home

Rentals in Eatonton, GA

Welcome to Eatonton, the Putnam County seat in central Georgia's lake country, a literary hometown of Joel Chandler Harris and Alice Walker framed by antebellum architecture.

Eatonton is the county seat of Putnam County, Georgia, situated in the central part of the state amid the rolling countryside between Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair. The city was named for William Eaton, a U.S. Army officer and diplomat of the early republic, and developed as a prosperous county seat whose antebellum homes and downtown reflect its 19th-century standing. Today Eatonton is home to roughly 6,800 residents and is best known for two things: its remarkably intact historic architecture and its outsized literary legacy. Few small towns claim the literary pedigree of Eatonton. Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus tales, was born here in 1848, and Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple, was born here in 1944; Flannery O'Connor began her career on a farm just outside town. The Georgia Writers Museum in the downtown honors these authors and the region's wider creative tradition, making Eatonton a genuine literary destination and a point of pride for residents. The city's built environment is equally distinctive. The downtown historic district and surrounding residential streets preserve more than 100 antebellum and Victorian structures, including Panola Hall, an 1854 Greek Revival home, and the city sits along Georgia's Antebellum Trail, which links the state's pre-Civil War towns. This architectural character, set around a traditional courthouse square, gives Eatonton a visual identity far richer than most towns of its size. Eatonton also functions as a gateway to central Georgia's lake country. Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair bracket the city, supporting boating, fishing, and a substantial waterfront and golf community, while the Oconee National Forest lies nearby for hunting, hiking, and camping. The Putnam County Charter School System serves local students, and the city's position on U.S. Highway 441 — about 75 miles southeast of Atlanta and convenient to Interstates 20 and 16 — keeps it connected to the region's larger centers. For buyers drawn to history, literature, and lake recreation, Eatonton offers a rare central Georgia combination.
