Hogansville sits in the gently rolling countryside of west-central Georgia, near the eastern edge of Troup County and roughly between LaGrange and Newnan. The city traces its name to William Hogan, who held two of the original state land grants here in the early 1830s, and whose holdings encompassed much of what became the downtown grid. Rail access turned the settlement into a small commercial center for the surrounding cotton and timber economy, and the tracks still shape the town's layout today. The city covers about 6.7 square miles, with a compact downtown of early-20th-century commercial buildings along Main Street. Several landmarks survive from its railroad heyday: the Royal Theater, built in 1937 with a distinctive Art Deco facade, now hosts films, live performances, and community events; a poured-concrete water tower completed in 1916 once served the local cannery and the city's first water system; and the restored train depot recalls the era when the railroad was the town's lifeline. A walking trail connects these sites. Public education is provided by the Troup County School System, which also serves the larger communities of LaGrange and West Point; Hogansville Elementary School is located in the city. Residential streets near downtown hold a mix of older frame and brick houses, while newer subdivisions spread toward the city's edges. Hogansville offers a slower, small-city pace with access to the larger retail, medical, and employment centers of LaGrange to the southwest and the Atlanta metro region beyond Newnan to the north. It tends to appeal to residents who want a historic, walkable small-town setting with a short commute to bigger job markets.
