Lithonia is a small incorporated city in eastern DeKalb County, Georgia, positioned about 18 miles east of downtown Atlanta along the I-20 corridor. Its name comes from the Greek for "city of stone," a fitting label for a community built on granite. The arrival of the Atlanta–Augusta railroad in the late 1800s allowed a booming quarry industry to take hold, and Lithonia granite was shipped across the region for construction for decades. That industrial history is still visible in the quarried outcrops and stone landscapes that surround the city today. The city proper is home to only about 2,600 residents, making it one of the smaller incorporated municipalities in metro Atlanta. Yet the surrounding Lithonia area functions as a far larger, predominantly residential community spread across southeastern DeKalb County, with neighborhoods, commercial corridors, and civic institutions that extend well beyond the historic downtown. The historic core retains a small-town character anchored by Bruce Street, and the historic Bruce Street School stands as a reminder of the community's African-American heritage as one of Georgia's older Black settlements. Lithonia's defining natural feature is the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, which begins just southeast of the city. The Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve protects thousands of acres of granite outcrops, forests, lakes, and creeks, including Arabia Mountain itself, a bare granite monadnock that is part of the same geological formation as Stone Mountain. Panola Mountain State Park lies nearby, extending the protected landscape. Day-to-day life in Lithonia blends that access to unusual, trail-rich open space with the practical convenience of the I-20 corridor, which puts central Atlanta, the Hartsfield-Jackson airport, and regional job centers within reach. The community is served by DeKalb County School District, with Lithonia High School serving as a longstanding anchor.
