Emory's Original Campus Town

Farms & Ranches in Oxford, GA

Welcome to Oxford, a historic Newton County college town and the original home of Emory University, set amid a National Register-listed historic district.

Oxford is a small city in Newton County, Georgia, occupying a gentle, wooded setting about 35 miles east of Atlanta. The community exists largely because of higher education: in 1834, Georgia Methodists established the Georgia Methodist Conference Manual Labor School near Covington, and two years later chartered Emory College, named for Bishop John Emory. The founders chose the site for its distance from city distractions, a deliberate rural setting that still shapes Oxford's character today. The village that grew up around the college was called Oxford, after the English university attended by John Wesley, founder of Methodism. Today that institution survives as Oxford College of Emory University, the two-year residential campus where Emory students may begin their degrees. The city's compact, historic core is its defining feature. Much of Oxford lies within the Oxford Historic District, a 146-acre area listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It contains a notable collection of Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, and Renaissance Revival structures, including Orna Villa, an antebellum home that is individually listed on the register. The entire town is designated a shrine of the United Methodist Church, underscoring its role as a cradle of Georgia Methodism. With roughly 2,300 residents, Oxford functions as both a college town and a quiet residential community. Students, faculty, and families share tree-lined streets near the campus, and the city sits just a mile north of Covington, Newton County's seat, whose restored square, shops, and popular film locations extend Oxford's everyday amenities. Public schools are part of the Newton County School System, and Atlanta and its airport are reachable via Interstate 20. The college's presence keeps the town intellectually and culturally active, while the surrounding countryside and Covington's restored square round out the daily experience. For homebuyers, Oxford offers a rare combination of small-town scale, architectural history, and proximity to both Covington and the Atlanta metro area.
