Rockmart is a town in Polk County, Georgia, in the northwestern part of the state. It developed as a railroad depot town after the Southern Railway built a station in the area, and it was incorporated in 1872, taking its name from the abundant slate deposits found nearby. Railroading and the slate industry shaped the town's early economy and its built landscape. That railroad legacy lives on today in a distinctive way. The Silver Comet Trail, a rails-to-trails path built on an abandoned Seaboard Airline Railroad line, passes through Rockmart and connects Atlanta to the Alabama state line, where it meets the Chief Ladiga Trail. The trail is named for the Silver Comet passenger train that carried travelers and mail between New York and Birmingham from 1947 until 1969, and it has made Rockmart a stopover and trailhead for cyclists, runners, and walkers crossing the region. With a population of roughly 4,700, Rockmart offers small-town living centered on a historic downtown that runs along Euharlee Creek. Seaborn Jones Memorial Park, a city park along the creek in the middle of downtown, is a focal point for gatherings, and the Polk School District operates the town's public schools, including Rockmart High School. The housing stock mixes older in-town homes and historic commercial buildings with newer residential development on the town's edges. Nearby Cedartown serves as the county seat, and larger regional hubs such as Rome and Cartersville are within a short drive, giving Rockmart a quiet, community-oriented character with convenient access to northwest Georgia's larger towns. The combination of rail heritage, trail access, and small-town scale defines the community's identity today.
