Atlanta's Newest Southeast Gateway
Welcome to Stonecrest, a DeKalb County city in metro Atlanta framed by the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area and anchored by one of the region's largest shopping destinations.
Stonecrest is one of Georgia's youngest cities, incorporated in 2016 from a large, unincorporated swath of southeastern DeKalb County. It is a majority-Black community in the heart of metro Atlanta's eastern suburbs, spanning roughly 29 square miles and holding close to 60,000 residents. Its boundaries reach from just north of Interstate 20 down to the Rockdale and Henry county lines, placing it at the outer edge of DeKalb where suburbia begins to give way to the wooded, rolling terrain of the Georgia Piedmont. The city's economic and cultural anchors are distinctive. The Mall at Stonecrest, one of the largest shopping centers in the metro area, anchors retail and employment, while the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve and the broader Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area provide an unusually rugged natural landscape of exposed granite, rare plant communities, and miles of trails. The Flat Rock Archives documents the region's deep African American history, connecting the modern city to the rural communities that preceded it. Stonecrest is part of the Atlanta Regional Commission's planning area and functions as a full-service city within metro Atlanta's growth orbit. Its location along I-20 gives residents a direct route into downtown Atlanta, roughly 20 miles to the west, and out toward Conyers and Augusta to the east. The city suits residents looking for larger, more affordable housing stock than central Atlanta offers, combined with genuine natural amenities and a strong sense of community identity. As a newer city, Stonecrest continues to build out its municipal institutions, but its geography, retail base, and natural landscape already give it a clear and recognizable character.
Stonecrest is in DeKalb County, Georgia, in the southeastern portion of the county. It borders the city of Lithonia and reaches toward Rockdale and Henry counties on the eastern edge of metro Atlanta.
Stonecrest was incorporated in 2016, making it one of Georgia's newest cities. It was formed by voter referendum from a large area of previously unincorporated southeastern DeKalb County, and its city government has continued building out municipal services and institutions since that time.
Stonecrest is served by the DeKalb County School District, one of the largest districts in Georgia. The district operates numerous elementary, middle, and high schools in and around the city, along with magnet and school-choice programs available to Stonecrest families.
Arabia Mountain is a granite monadnock and the centerpiece of the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, part of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. It offers miles of hiking and cycling trails across exposed granite outcrops, seasonal pools, and rare plant communities.
Stonecrest is roughly 20 miles east of downtown Atlanta, with direct access via Interstate 20. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is typically 30 to 45 minutes away by car depending on traffic, and MARTA bus service operates within the area.
