Villa Rica is a city in Carroll and Douglas counties, Georgia, set in the western arc of the Atlanta metropolitan area about 32 miles from downtown Atlanta. Home to roughly 17,000 residents, it is one of the metro region's older communities, with a history tied directly to the discovery of gold in the early 1800s. The area's gold rush predates California's. In the early 1800s, prospectors were drawn to what became Georgia's first major gold strike, and at its peak 19 commercial mines operated in and around the city. That heritage is preserved at the Pine Mountain Gold Museum and Scenic Railroad, Georgia's only gold museum located on an actual mine, which combines mining history with nature-based recreation. The annual Gold Rush Festival celebrates the story each year with a 5K, parade, and concert in the downtown and at the MILL Amphitheater. The city's modern role is shaped by its position on the Interstate 20 corridor. I-20 passes through the southern part of Villa Rica with exits 24 and 26, carrying commuters east toward Douglasville and Atlanta, while U.S. Route 78 (the historic Bankhead Highway) runs through the center of town and Georgia 61 serves as the main north-south commercial corridor. This connectivity has driven residential growth, with new subdivisions spreading across the city's western and southwestern edges alongside established neighborhoods and the golf-course community of The Georgian. Education is organized by county: the Carroll County portion of the city is served by the Carroll County School System, while the Douglas County portion attends Douglas County Schools. A historic, walkable downtown anchors the community's identity, and the combination of that small-town core, gold-rush heritage, and fast-growing residential areas defines Villa Rica as a West Georgia city that balances history with continued expansion within the Atlanta metro.
